Ingredients
  

  • 2-3 fillets Matjes herring fillets 2-3 fillets per sandwich
  • 1 tbsp Fresh dill for garnish
  • 1/2 small Thinly sliced onions preferably red onions for color and flavor
  • 1/4 cup Pickled gherkin or cucumbers optional, adds a great crunch
  • 1 tbsp Mustard optional, for extra flavor boost
  • 4 rolls Fresh, soft rolls or buns the bread should be soft enough to complement the fish without overpowering it
  • As desired Butter for spreading, if desired

Instructions
 

  • Slice the rolls in half and spread a thin layer of butter on the inside of each roll, if desired.
  • Place 2-3 Matjes herring fillets on the bottom half of each roll.
  • Top the herring fillets with thinly sliced red onions and fresh dill for garnish.
  • If using, add pickled gherkin or cucumbers for an extra crunch. Optionally, drizzle mustard over the ingredients for an additional flavor boost.
  • Top with the other half of the roll and serve immediately, enjoying this simple and delicious Matjesbrötchen sandwich!
